FamZoo alternative

A FamZoo alternative built for the iPhone-first family.

FamZoo has been running the virtual-family-bank model for decades. It's good. It's also a subscription, web-first, and feature-deep in places most parents don't need. KidCash is the streamlined iPhone version, one-time purchase, parent-only.

FamZoo is the original power-user allowance tool — virtual family bank accounts, IOU tracking, optional real prepaid cards, and a subscription model that's been around longer than most kid-finance apps. If you want depth and you don't mind a monthly fee, it's a serious tool.

KidCash takes the most-used parts of that model — allowance automation, parent-paid interest, savings goals, full history — and ships them as a native iPhone app for $4.99 once. For families that don't need the deeper IOU ledger or a real prepaid card, it's a lot cheaper and a lot less to operate.

The honest call

Which one is right for your family?

KidCash is the right answer when…

  • You want a native iPhone app, not a web dashboard.
  • You want a one-time price, not a subscription.
  • Your needs are allowance + interest + goals (not IOUs or prepaid cards).
  • Privacy matters — no servers, no analytics, no ads.

FamZoo is the right answer when…

  • You want a formal IOU / loan ledger between siblings or with parents.
  • You want an optional real prepaid card paired with the tracker.
  • You prefer a web interface and a long-running, established platform.
  • You're managing a large household or extended family from one dashboard.

FamZoo is the right tool for power users. KidCash is the right tool for everyone else — and saves you the subscription.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Yes, for the core workflow most FamZoo users actually use: tracking allowance, paying interest, running savings goals, and keeping a complete history per kid. KidCash does all of that, on iPhone, as a one-time purchase. The deeper FamZoo features around real prepaid cards and IOUs aren't part of KidCash by design.

FamZoo is a subscription, billed monthly or annually per family. KidCash is $4.99 once on the App Store, with all kids included. Over five years the difference is roughly the price of a nice dinner per year, recurring, vs a cup of coffee once.

Not as a dedicated feature. You can record a loan as a take with a note, and the running balance reflects it. For families running formal IOU ledgers between siblings or with parents, FamZoo's purpose-built tracking is more granular.

No. KidCash is purely a ledger, by design. We don't issue, process, or partner on cards. Families who want a real prepaid card paired with their tracker would stay on FamZoo or look at GoHenry.

Both apps handle unlimited kids in the base price. KidCash's UI is built around 1–6 kids comfortably; FamZoo's web interface scales further if you're managing a very large household or extended family.

Scope. Trying to be everything for everyone is how an indie app becomes a worse experience for the 90% case. KidCash is laser-focused on the parent who wants automatic allowance and a private ledger. That's the lane.
